✅ 2.8.x – Location tags – what are they and why are they important?

This is amongst the most important content on the route pages – telling the user where the route goes, what they can see along the way, which places they can expect to visit and a few fun ideas for things to do too.

This is amongst the most important content on the route pages – telling the user where the route goes, what they can see along the way, which places they can expect to visit and a few fun ideas for things to do too.

There are two fields you’ll need to edit to control which locations appear on your route listing:

Location tags

What are location tags?

We “tag” locations to a route listing – think of these location tags as like assigning categories to a blog post.

By doing this it allows our website to know which locations your route serves – this includes countries, counties, cities, villages, attractions and any other type of location stored within our system.

For instance: the only way the Scenic website will show your route on the “England” page is if you add the “England” location tag.

How do I add location tags?

Firstly you’ll need to make sure all of your locations have been added to Scenic. If they haven’t, you can do add them yourself in the Locations Dashboard within the Scenic Listings Manager.

To add a location tag to a route listing, you need to:

  1. Edit your route in the Scenic Listings Manager
  2. Go to Places > Location tags in the route editor
  3. Add the Countries served by the route – include United Kingdom if it’s not a Republic of Ireland route
  4. Add the Counties served by the route – we have already added every county in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland
  5. Add the locations (towns, cities, villages, hamlets, etc) served by the route
  6. Click “Update locations”

It’s worth noting that this field does not affect which locations are shown on your listing – you control which locations are shown on your listing in the “Places to visit” and “Things to do” sections of the route editor.

If your listing is not published (i.e. it’s a draft) it will not appear on the location pages. Only published listings will appear on location pages.
